It's time for an update on the Planetary Rulerships in Astrology!
I want to talk about planetary rulerships for my first post on this blog, how they have changed, and how it's about time we start using a new rulership system. This post is now a youtube video! Watch here and be sure to subscribe to my youtube channel here: youtube.com/@OracleElectricAstrology
I feel like I was very fortunate to learn astrology from this person and I've always used this new rulership system because it just made better sense to me, the old system seemed forced and outdated. And I actually feel that it was one of most confusing things about learning astrology, probably why I didn't begin learning astrology earlier.
I know this new Rulership system may be upsetting to some people, but we must remember that the idea of rulerships, these are is not founded in any mathematical basis like astrology itself which deals with describing relationships in trigonmetry. Rulerships are a way teach very basic concepts as reference points for understanding astrological basics. And really, that older rulership was suitable for the conciousness it was created from.
12 Planets for 12 Signs
Ancient cultures around the world believed that consciousness and history move in a vast cycle of time with alternating Dark and Golden Ages - Plato called it the Great Year with rotation of 25,770 years. Today we know it as one "precession of the equinox," an obscure astronomical motion of the northern pole's transition through the zodiac.
As you can see in these diagrams, these 2 planets take a very long time to go around the sun. Eris takes ~ 560 years and Sedna takes ~ 11,400 years (WOW!) These orbital periods are so long, that it has been hard for the current human consciousness to imagine the impact that these planets have on not only people but entire civilizations.
Before Eris and Sedna were acknowledged, the planet rulerships were organized a bit differently. It almost made sense, but there were many rulerships that were somewhat forced, but the main issue is that these are very shallow perspectives of these signs, because we were trying to fit 12 signs into 10 planets.
I wanted this to be my first post because the rulership system is a core understanding and foundation for how I teach astrology and the deeper darker aspects. I've always been drawn to the root and reality of things, I don't shy away from darker concepts.
Part of hermetic and occult wisdom involves reconciling with our ideals, and not being afraid of these "darker" parts of our reality, and the old rulership seems rather immature, idealistic, and shallow, because the true nature of these signs isnt showcased.
With 12 signs for 12 planets in this way, I hope that this new rulership system and the correlating graphic I've made resonates with you like it did for me, so perhaps we can evaluate the signs in a deeper way.
The new rulership makes sense intrinsically on multiple levels. This chart shows that it is sequence based, with one sign for every planet, breaking things down into overlapping themes of seasonal, elemental, and modal energy.
I designed it this way to better show in a linear way, the procession of consciousness, and spirit, in sequential order. I also added the colored chakra system, as well as plane groupings (body, mind, and spirit) that are found throughout nature. It also shows the ancient and perhaps lost relationship between the glyphs themselves and the planets.
♈ ARIES = ☉THE SUN
So lets start off with Aries of course, the first sign of the zodiac, ruler of the first house, and what better celestial body than the Sun, and all it's glory, to be ruled by Aries. When Aries is ruling Mars, we are twisting what Mars really is is. Mars is more complex than the chaotic and cardinal energy that Aries embodies. Aries is a very pure and simple energy. Being the baby of the zodiac, it is truly the most innocent, and actually takes a more powerful presence in the natal chart. Think of how the Aries native is forever young, the Aries native is usually notably brave yes, but that is an innocent bravery, it is actually self esteem in it's purest form.
Mars. you'll see would be better suited to be ruled by Leo, and we will get to that in a moment, and you'll understand why mars is a more complex planet than the sun. Mars is focused willpower, it's a different type of anger and fire than what Aries is. Aries lacks the long sightedness to embody mars energy, an angry Aries is chaotic, and quickly over it, their anger is not war like, it's more like a tantrum. You'll notice Aries natives being very quick to anger and equally as quick to forget their anger and move on. That intensity is short lived.
The sun is rightly so, the center of native's life, the center of our world and our psychology, and aries people embody this energy, cardinal fire, self esteem embodied, simple and youthful.
So in the new rulership, lets think about Aries ruling the sun and really come to the understanding of that cardinal fire of Aries which propels them to behave the way they do, as well as how Aries is in our own chart and how it takes on the house it falls in.
The spirit evolves out of Aries into the body, and the simple material form of Taurus. In the old rulership we said that Taurus ruled Venus, and I think that doesn't really give credit to either Taurus or Venus. Taurus is a sensual and pleasure driven sign yes, but that's not what Venus is really about.
In the new planet rulership, we assign Taurus to Mercury and that's because of the material effect that mercury has on everything in our conscious life. Mercury deals with day to day affairs, ordinary transactions in life, that are critical for how we acquire material possessions.
Mercury is the gears of life that turn and move us forward in our physical reality, inch by inch, and we see how things are effected when Mercury is in Retrograde. It is cited that:
"By using 48 countries' stock market indices, we find that stock market returns are 3.33% lower annually during Mercury Retrograde periods than in other periods."
This is small but significant and something we can count on every Mercury retrograde. This fall in revenue when Mercury is in retrograde shows that "our thoughts are things", it calls us to take heed to the material reality that our mind is effecting reality whether we consciously are aware of it or not.
Mercury, and Taurean nature deals with the fundamentals of physics, which includes metaphysics, and our ability to shift the material world with our minds through manifestation and law of attraction.
Looking at the glyph of Mercury, to me, it looks like a cross between Venus and Taurus. Mercury is the bridge that connects Taurus to Venus, by reconciling with the physical world, we are able to experience the Venusian influence and have love or value in our life.
When we allow Taurus to rule Mercury, it brings our attention to these principles, and allows us a better understanding of the power of the subtle energies around us and within our own minds and efforts.
So in the old rulership Gemini is ruling Mercury, and in the new rulership we've simply switched Taurus and Gemini, so that Gemini is ruling Venus, and Taurus is ruling Mercury.
Venus is said to be the planet of love, sensuality, pleasure, and attributed with that side of Taurus, but it's much more rudimentary than that. Love, in the most basic sense, is not romance.
Love is what the spirit finds while leaving material pursuits, and finds in other people. Love is how one feels for their brother or sister, neighbor, or any family member, it's has more purity and simplicity than just romantic love.
Venusian energy shapes our values, wherever it is in our chart. What we value, moreso than who we love. Venus is also how we love, and is not limited to the things we find pleasure in.
Gemini is a masculine sign, looking at the glyph we can see that there's two lines being joined together. Gemini rules the 3rd house of communication, the simplest form of relationship, love, socialization, and intellect.
Gemini has the key phrase of "I think", and the way we are attracted to other people and find more value outside of our material posessions is a mutable function of our psychology. They say we can't help who we love, but we also can't help how we love.
Hopefully that makes sense, and when we think of Venus, we can associate it with the mutable, social, masculine nature of gemini with this new rulership.
In the old rulership, Leo rules the sun, and we already talked about how Aries is a better ruler for the sun because of the simplicity and centrality that both Aries and the sun embody. So we are essentially switching the sun and Mars in the new rulership.
Nature is about sequence, and the sun is the center, the actual life giving resource that signifies the spark of life, but Leo is more evolved than that.
Leo is the second evolution of fire, after we have grieved the initial pain that cancer has brought us to, Leo is what pulls us out of feeling sorry for ourselves, so abundantly that it spills over onto others. Leo is the ego embodied, and perfectly represented by the cat, or lion.
But Mars is also not just a planet of aggression, it’s the planet of war and willpower. War is more complicated than Aries energy, war is about strategy and patience, there’s a focus of willpower to win a war, whereas Aries is too impatient and shortsighted to win a war.
Mars is our willpower, it’s the steady flame that keeps us going and impresses us in all action and conflict we encounter. Leo is is steady, fixed, masculine fire, it is reliable in how it behaves in our chart. Our house of ego and pride, it is the flame that never burns out.
Leo also rules the 5th house which is our house of creativity and sex, it’s our approach to transmuting our pain into a new thing. It rules our relationships with our children as well, who are products of our creativity. And mars is all about sex right, it’s a masculine primitive part of us that wants to have sex and wants to impose our will onto another sexually, to express ourselves creatively is also how we express ourselves sexually, and that’s what Mars is really about, it’s not just about war and conflict, it’s willpower.
And as you notice, the ways we describe each sign become much more intricate and deep the higher we move in the zodiac.
That is a heavy load that Virgo is assigned to, the mythology of Virgo as we know is the virgins who Zeus sends down to collect the grain before the winter and harvest it. There is a duty associated with Virgo, a nervousness some would say, and really it’s just the mutable quality of earth. J
The complexity of Jupiter is why I think Virgo’s detailed and analytical capacity is a better ruler for it.
Libra’s really about appearances, there is a deep world that Libra’s don’t really talk about with others and the unevolved Libra comes off as fake, vain, shallow, because they simply haven’t learned how to convey the realities that are so unpleasant to you, that they are constantly picking up on, forgiving, and reconciling with. For this reason I would place Libra as the ruler of Saturn.
Now I know that Capricorn is supposedly the sign of structure and discipline, but that’s not really what Saturn is. Saturn is the appearance of power, order, and structure. It’s orbit is only 29 years, that isn’t really long enough for change to take place in anyone other than the native. We are lucky to have 3 saturn returns in our lifetime, and by the end of 90 years or so, our impact on societal structure is only appearance based.
Think about Libra’s affiliation with justice, weighing good and bad, Libra’s are incredibly judgemental, it’s how they are wired to be. They make excellent judges and attorneys, because they love to measure out, in a very neutral way, like a scale, the rights and wrongs of the world.
Saturn deals with the appearance of structure, and so does Libra, and that is one of the darker realities that I was mentioning earlier, where the old rulership really doesn’t cover so that is why I would place libra as the ruler of Saturn.
Uranus is a planet with an 84 year orbit, if you’re lucky, you will make it through the depths of a uranus return. Many people do not make that and they don’t see their uranus return. So that’s an entire lifetime of understanding wrapped up in that planet.
Uranus is associated with change, and yearning or longing for change. Scorpio embodies this longstanding desire for transmutation as well. Scorpio deals with the pain of loss, death, leaving the earthly plane and entering into the spiritual realm deriving meaning out of life.
The Uranus cycle highlights what is true, what is timeless about our physical world, is truth. After 84 years we can see that what’s left is whatever has the capacity and depth to withstand over 8 jupiter returns, and nearly 3 saturn returns, if a business or institution lasts for 84 years, that’s about as long as it takes for a Scorpio native to transmute all that they understand and feel about the physical and spiritual realms.
Uranus and Scorpio deal with themes of transformation, desire, and truth. Scorpio doesn’t really fit as a ruler of pluto because pluto is about power, and Scorpio isn’t after power, it’s after change and understanding and a relief to their pain, regret, etc.
We’ll talk about why a different sign is suited for Pluto in a bit, but Uranus is associated with Aquarius in the old rulership and I think that association doesn’t give Aquarius enough credit.
Even with the glyph of uranus, it looks like the bridge between two worlds, the physical body, and the spirit world, Scorpio sits right between those two as an anchor, a check point, where we must pay our duties and sort out all that we did in this life that matters, and what doesn’t matter.
Scorpio also deals with the number 8 and the 8th house, these are themes of unspoken understanding, mystery, probing and getting to the root of issues, mortality, taxes, timelessness, legacy, inheritance, etc. Scorpio is associated with mars as well in the old rulership because of how accurate and impactful scorpio really is as a native, they are advanced versions of virgo and libra, all the details, all the balancing and pleasing others, turns into something else entirely when it evolves into scorpio energy. And that is why i would associate Scorpio and the ruler of Uranus.
Sagittarius being ruled by Jupiter in the old rulership seems like a stretch to me, it doesn’t really cover the pervasive mutability involved in how sagittarius functions. Sagittarius is a fire sign but more importantly it is mutable and responsible for our 9th house and the number 9.
The number 9 is associated with luck, higher learning, traveling, faith, adventure, opportunity, and adaptability, which so very much Sagittarius embodies. But what is most significant about Sagittarius is their embodiment of hypocrisy.
We are all hypocritical somewhere in our chart, everyone has Sagittarius somewhere. Being called a hypocrite is not usually seen as a compliment, especially to someone really really really interested in being accurate.
Sagittarius is the last fire sign in the zodiac, positioned before the dead of winter. The glyph is an arrow being pointed into the sky, it feels compelling and that’s why Sagittarius natives are so quick witted and adaptable, they always know what to say and their answers tend to just jump out of their mouths. The energy of Sagittarius has no purpose other than to aim and hope it lands, and the drive of this energy plays out in the way Sagittarius tends to be very concerned with knowing the truth, and being on the right side of things.
The actual truth, in hermetic wisdom, is that there is no right side to things. Dark and light exists within all of us, and every situation can be positive for someone while being negative for someone else. Sagittarius energy is themed with the idealist notions that they can light up the dark in a pursuit of righteousness. This is not only hypocritical, it’s illusionary. It’s such a strong illusion that a Sagittarius may become angry with you for even suggesting that their point of view is incorrect. Whereas their opposition, Gemini, is constantly reconciling with the duality of life, Sagittarius natives are compelled to choose a side, die on that side, all fueled by the illusion of right and wrong.
It’s an advanced illusion, but an illusion none the less. That is why Sagittarius is a better ruler for Neptune. Neptune is associated with illusion and blind faith, the house that it sits in remains a very misunderstood place in our chart, if we look directly at it, we remember it, but it otherwise is a very mutable and unconscious part of our psychology. This is why i would associate Sagittarius with Neptune.
Cardinal Earth is one of the most powerful energies in our charts, perhaps the most powerful. It’s more powerful than the drama that plays out in a courtroom, or the fluctuations in real estate, Capricorn is a lot more solid and complete than that. Capricorn natives are born in the harshest part of winter, the only bit of life that is left after the flame of sagittarius has been put out. This is cardinal earth, the year has been completed, it is what come after death of all living things, and it is unburdened with appearances, or even other people. In order to survive the winter, Capricorn has a duty to be logical, strategic, and mater the surrounding elements around them. They
Capricorn rules the 10th house and the number 10. This is associated with our career because it is the final product of our creativity and higher learning, it’s what we present to the world as our work. This is our house of power.
Pluto is the planet associated with power, not saturn. While Saturn deals with trimming the fat and working in the native to argue about what they stand for, it’s also a teacher for the native, developing them the same way Libra does in our lives.
Pluto has an orbit of 248 years, it’s about as long as it takes for real power to shift and change hands. Capricorn is patient and long suffering, it has the foresight, reasoning, discipline, and mastery necessary to control. The house of Capricorn is a power seat in our chart, wherever it is. It’s where we take executive control over our lives, where we act upon our most logical understandings.
The status of Capricorn, and it’s inherent power, is the reason we see it’s demonization interwoven through out recent history through western Christianity for the purposes of colonialism, control, and slavery. The demonization can be seen in the images of baphomet, used to make us fear capricorn energy and associate it with evil for no other purpose other than to keep us psychologically enslaved to that religion, fearful of the reality of our own responsibility to ourselves, which religion seeks to replace.
I’ll make another video going into that relationship between capricorn and christianity sometime in the future, but for now I hope that makes sense.
Capricorn is the ruler of Pluto because of it’s sheer cardinal power.
So Aquarius originally being the ruler of Uranus didn’t seem to do justice to all that Aquarius is. The better planet for Aquarius to rule would be the more recently discovered planet Eris.
Now Eris has a 560 year orbit, and Eris is a newly discovered planet, it’s only been talked about by astrologers since 2005! the mythology goes like this. There was a wedding of two gods that everyone was invited to, except Eris, the Goddess of discord, she was pissed, came to the wedding anyway in secret, or in disguise, and tossed a golden apple with the inscription “to the fairest” on it. Three Goddesses decided to argue over it and compete for who was the fairest, Aphrodite won the contest and this started a war between the gods known as the Trojan War.
So a dynamic about air signs is all of them are dualistic, and a big part duality is the relationships between masculine and feminine, male and female etc. Eris is traditionally thought of as a female, she is personified in the myth as a woman, responsible for a lot of the evil in the world, I mean when your really read about the evil attributes associated with Eris in some of this mythology, its important to understand that a lot of female behavior has been demonized throughout history, we see that with Eris being blamed for all of this discord, and even a war that happened indirectly as a result of her actions.
When talking about aquarius, there is a general theme of duality, even the glyphs of all the air signs show the relationship between two separate lines, there’s a theme of comparison, socialization, and just relationships between all of us as humans. When our intellectual energy, the air sign energy, has evolved past all the signs, into the the 11th house, the house of humanities, the conversation becomes much more difficult to fully encompass.
Aquarius is about the duality between larger concepts such as harmony vs discord, ego vs humanity, subconscious vs conscious, even evil vs good. There is a power struggle in our house of aquarius between who we want to be and should be, as well as who we really are, and reconciling with the discord of that.
It’s not so much about change and transmutation like we would think of when we really identify scorpio and uranus for what they are. It’s about the everchanging and predictability of change itself, the truth that change is always present. That discord and strife and struggle is part of life, and all development of all things, the actual negative view of this comes from an unevolved place.
Eris the planet is very, strange in it’s epihilion orbit so it spends a lot of time in some signs and others only a short time, it’s a sort of predictable uneveness, and it reflects the predictable unfairness that we must reconcile with as we grow spiritually, accept ourselves, other people, and our corporeal reality, yet still want to change it and work on it. There is a fixedness to this, aquarius is fixed air, fixed intellect. The only fixed thing about change is the repetitiveness of it, as well as the desire for truth, a fixed truth, and an understanding and acceptance of the duality of reality itself. This whole realization is very intellectual, right, it’s not an emotional thing, it’s very air sign, and very aquarian.
Aquarius also rules technology and that should kinda bring the explanation down to earth a little bit for you, aquarius bridges larger gaps between strife and our ideal form. All air signs are intellect, that is inherently what intellect is, the invisible bridge taking earth understanding of logic, applying it to carry us over the pain and emotion of water, into the greatness of fire. I’ll try to make a separate video about that but hopefully that makes sense.
The planet Sedna was discovered in 2003 by a team of American astronomers at Palomar Observatory on Mount Palomar, California. At that time, it was the most distant object in the solar system that had ever been observed, It has such a large and epihilion orbit of ,408 years that the only mythology around it was that which was preserved by Inuits.
The mythology of Sedna is that she was a princess who had a hunger that nothing could satisfy, her father became frustrated with this and took her out to sea to drown her. As he cast her overboard, she clung to the boat and he cut off her fingers so she could not swim and sank to the bottom of the sea. For 11,408 years, sedna sat to ponder her pain and anguish while becoming one with the sea and ruling over the sea creatures. Imagine the consciousness that would come of 11,408 years! The implied metaphor showcases a level of forgiveness, delusion, pain, and transcending spiritual understanding. That length of time is really enough that any grudge would be forgotten, and there’s a certain delusionary aspect to that which is very piscean.
Pisces, and the 12th house. Rules the subconscious mind, dreams, and an etherial intangible place in our psychology that is a precursor to every thought we have. The subconscious mind is a mutable and easily influenced part of our minds, we can fill it with toxic content, or willfully protect it and feed it what we know is good for it.
The key phrase of Pisces is "I believe", it’s the sign of faith and spirituality. Pisces is the energy that concedes and accepts the repetitive cycle of the universe. All the grief, all the joy, the nature of humanity, and nature itself. The energy carries an infinite wisdom from many lifetimes, and the house of pisces in your chart is where you have an ability or understanding that feels infinite. I’ll make more videos about pisces through the houses and that might better explain that, but thats a summed up reason why I believe Sedna is a better rule for Pisces energy.
So lets take a look at this chart again. This rulership graphic, it shows an evolution of energy, from the body, to the spirit, from the start of consciousness to the end of that cycle, and in my opinion this is a much better way of understanding and teaching astrology. We also notice when looking at it like this, a certain correlation between the complexity of the sign, and the distance of that planet from us. I love how also looking at how the body starts and ends with cardinality, and the mind portion starts and ends with fixed ness, and spirit starts and ends with mutability.
Thank you for reading
I would love to hear what you think of this new rulership, I know it might be hard for some to accept, feel free to leave some comments about your thoughts and I’ll do my best to make a video addressing your questions and comments.
